On December 19, 2021, a patient with myelodysplasia (high-risk group) at Jiaxing Second Hospital finally found a matching donor platelet in the platelet gene bank of Jiaxing Central Blood Station in Zhejiang Province after long-term ineffective platelet transfusion, achieving precise platelet matching transfusion. The platelet count also increased from 7 × 109/L to 25 × 109/L, effectively controlling clinical bleeding symptoms. This is also the first successful case of targeted recruitment, precise typing, and effective treatment from the local platelet gene bank since Jiaxing Central Blood Station joined the Zhejiang Provincial Platelet Gene Bank Collaboration Group.

Since 2019, Zhejiang Province has established a platelet gene bank collaboration group. Under the leadership of the Zhejiang Provincial Blood Center, 11 prefecture level cities in the province have actively participated in the construction of platelet gene banks and joined the collaboration group. During this period, if patients encounter platelet transfusion failures that cannot be solved locally, they will seek help from the Zhejiang Provincial Platelet Gene Database, and the Provincial Blood Center will help solve a series of problems such as platelet gene matching and supply.
Platelet transfusion is mainly used to treat bleeding in patients with thrombocytopenia or functional defects, and is commonly used in patients with severe trauma, hematological disorders, or surgical procedures. In recent years, with the increasingly widespread clinical application of platelet transfusion, the situation of ineffective platelet transfusion has become increasingly apparent, which not only delays the subsequent treatment of patients, but also increases the treatment cost and economic pressure on patients. It also leads to the waste of platelet resources. The successful utilization of the platelet gene bank fully demonstrates that targeted recruitment of local platelet gene banks can effectively shorten the supply time of platelets; The precise genetic matching infusion method can fully improve the effectiveness of platelet infusion; It greatly saves scarce platelet resources and maximizes platelet utilization.
At present, 29 blood centers across the country have joined the China Platelet Gene Bank Collaboration Group, and the cumulative number of platelet banks has reached tens of thousands. The platelet bank has begun to take shape, but successful clinical application cases are still few and there is a huge gap in the clinical application market.
